Lorain Schools vote to consolidate LAK, Southview

LORAIN — Lorain Schools Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson got the go-ahead from the school board Wednesday night to consolidate Lorain’s two high schools, Admiral King and Southview, into one of the schools.

Atkinson declined today to speculate on which school will be used for the consolidation, which is expected to save about $2.8 million a year.

The decision between Admiral King and Southview will be made at the Feb. 17 school board meeting. The district’s eventual plan is to build a new high school.

Meanwhile, the school board voted Wednesday night to place a $5.9 million, 5-year emergency levy on the May 4 ballot that would, if passed, help alleviate a budget crisis.

The millage will be set by the county auditor but it is expected to be about 9 mills which would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $275 a year.
