LORAIN -Clearview school district Superintendent Rick Buckosh announced he intends to retire this year.
“I’ve spent 35 years in education, and 35 years is kind of the magic number when you retire in education,” Buckosh said Friday. “I’ll work out the rest of the year and retire effective Aug. 1.”
Buckosh, superintendent for the past eight years, said he’s seen a lot during his three-decade career.
“I’ve seen a lot of changes in education, there’s no doubt about that,” Buckosh said. “The field always seems to have changes. Most recently, it’s a lot of government involvement, some for the good, some not so good. It’s better to be at the end of a career now than at the beginning.”
Buckosh, a 1971 graduate of Clearview High School, said he’s loved being superintendent of a district he grew up in.
“I’ve just enjoyed being here,” Buckosh said. “It’s been an honor and a pleasure to serve as superintendent after being a student here … Clearview has always been a great place to be. I always thought of high school as one of the greatest times of my life.”
While he’ll miss the students and staff, Buckosh said he won’t miss the economics of his job.
“It’s just a tough time for everybody out there, and it’s just as hard for school districts and to ask for money, with levies and things like that, when people don’t have money is really difficult,” he said. “I spent most of my job on that and that part I certainly won’t miss. What I’ll miss is the kids. I think being around kids keeps you young.”
The board is expected to accept his retirement during their meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday and then begin the process of replacing him.
Buckosh said most school districts use a service, like the Educational Service Center of Lorain County or the Ohio School Board Association, to search for candidates.
The finalists are submitted to board members who may visit schools where candidates currently work as well as schedule interviews.
The process takes several months, Buckosh said, but a new candidate could be chosen by late spring.
