ELYRIA — A Mexican national pleaded not guilty at his arraignment today to involuntary manslaughter and other charges in connection with a fatal car crash in December.
Emelio Hernandez Perez is also charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and DUI in the crash, which left 65-year-old Neil Jalowiec dead.
Police said the 23-year-old Perez was at twice the legal driving limit when the Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving slammed into the back of Jalowiec’s car, which was stopped at a traffic light at state Route 57 and West River Road.
Witnesses to the crash said they never saw brake lights and the Jeep was weaving in and out of traffic before the crash.
Jalowiec, of Graton, died of internal chest and abdominal injuries caused by the crash. Perez was treated and released from a Cleveland hospital.
Perez remains in the Lorain County Jail.
