AVON — The Miller Nature Preserve took another step forward Monday as Avon City Council voted unanimously to authorize a special use permit to Lorain County Metro Parks to turn the 78 acres of donated land into a park.

Plans for Avon’s first Metro Park, located at state Route 83 and West Park Road, include a 5,000-square-foot conservatory, a 3,000-square-foot visitors center, gardens, a patio, parking and other improvements to the site.

The project is expected to cost about $2 million. Lorain County Metro Parks hopes to begin the project this spring.

The Council also voted to waive internally generated fees for the project such as planning reviews and zoning applications.

External fees, such as for outside consultants on the project, would still be applied. Planning coordinator James Piazza said this was standard procedure for government and city projects.

The park will be named after Raymond “Buddy” Miller, who donated the land in memory of his late wife, Susan, who loved to garden.
