Cribbs close to new deal

Less than two months ago, All-Pro special teamer Joshua Cribbs cleaned out his locker and vowed not to play again for the Browns without a new contract.

That deal is near, according to a source familiar with negotiations. The source said the sides “are close, not real close” to completing a deal and there’s no timetable on something being finalized.

The scouting combine is next week in Indianapolis, and the timing could be right for a deal to get done.

Cribbs has three years left on a six-year, $6.7 million deal. According to a report on NFL.com, the three remaining years will be replaced in the new deal, with the possibility of years being added at the end.

The report says Cribbs wants about $10 million guaranteed and the Browns have offered a little more than $5 million. The addition of president Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert has helped the pace and tone of negotiations.
