Cash-starved fund to keep money from 4-H dinner
ELYRIA — The money from the Lorain County Extension Development Fund’s annual dinner and auction usually is sent to Columbus to pay for state grants, but not this year.
Instead, the money will be kept locally to help deal with cuts to the Extension Office’s budget that already have prompted the imposition of a $10 annual fee for the 2,000 youths who participate in 4-H.
Lynda Jacobs, a 4-H vice president, told the county commissioners of the plan during Wednesday’s meeting.
“It will be used to help just Lorain County youth,” she said.
The Extension Office saw the amount it receives from the county cut from $243,000 in 2009 to $103,200 this year.
The money from the dinner and auction will be used wherever it is needed locally, Jacobs said, from salaries to buying office supplies.
The dinner will be March 17 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner — which includes all-you-can-eat ribs and chicken, along with potato salad, baked beans, salad, rolls and pie — will be served at 6:30 p.m.
The $15 tickets must be purchased in advance at the Lorain County Soil and Water Conservation Office in Elyria, Wellington Implement in Wellington, the offices of attorney Kathleen Norton Fox in LaGrange or Messaros Photography in Elyria.
Tickets may also be purchased from any Endowment Board member.
The event will feature a silent auction, a live auction and raffles.
The Extension Office can be reached at (440) 326-5851.
