Elyria Catholic, Southview girls move on

The Elyria Catholic girls basketball team is in the Division III district final.

The Panthers downed Hillsdale 49-28 Thursday at Wellington High School. They’ll play top-seeded Loudonville on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the district title. Loudonville was a 65-57 winner over Columbia in the other semifinal at Wellington.

In Division I action at Medina High School, Southview advanced to Saturday’s 1 p.m. final with a 52-43 win over top-seeded Westlake, which was playing without its top player, Kalpana Beach, sidelined after an emergency appendectomy last week.

In the other semifinal at Medina, Elyria hit just 2 of 16 free throws and lost 44-32 to Cloverleaf. The Saints will meet Cloverleaf for the district title.

In Division II, Holy Name ended Vermilion’s season with a 64-47 win at Elyria High.

In boys basketball action, Rittman downed Open Door 54-44 in a Division IV sectional game at Garfield Heights.
