President Obama returning to Northeast Ohio Monday
Nearly two months after a whirlwind visit to Lorain County, President Barack Obama is returning to Northeast Ohio.
No location has been announced for the visit, which will take place Monday and focus on health insurance reform, the White House announced Wednesday in a news release.
Further details of the Ohio visit will be announced in the next few days, the release said.
Obama visited the Philadelphia area two days ago and will be in St. Charles, Mo., today to discuss health care.
During his speech earlier this week at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa., Obama argued that the time is right to tackle health care reform.
“Every year, the problem gets worse,” Obama said during that speech. “Every year, insurance companies deny more people coverage because they’ve got pre-existing conditions. Every year, they drop more people’s coverage when they get sick — right when they need it most. Every year, they raise premiums higher and higher and higher.”
Democrats and Republicans have spent a year in a bitter feud over whether to pass a massive overhaul of health care, and Obama has called for a vote on the bill that the Senate has already approved.
Republicans have argued that the plan is too costly and should be scrapped, but Obama wants the House to pass the Senate bill and make changes to it during the reconciliation process, a move opposed by Republicans and some Democrats.
Obama discussed the debate over health care during a town hall meeting at Lorain County Community College on Jan. 22.
He also toured several local companies and met with local leaders, including a lunch meeting with Elyria Mayor Bill Grace.
