Accident near Avon Commons sends two people to area hospitals

AVON — A two-car accident at the Detroit Road entrance to Avon Commons sent two people to area hospitals this morning.
The vehicles, a red Nissan Sentra that was turning left into Avon Commons and a black Dodge sedan that was westbound on Detroit, collided about 10:30 a.m.
The female driver of the Nissan complained of leg pain and was taken by ambulance to St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake, and the male driver of the Dodge was taken by ambulance to the Avon Emergency Care Center for back pain. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.
Avon police patrolman Mike Reinker said there there is a dispute about what color the traffic light was and who had the right of way, so the accident remains under investigation.
The left turn lane on Detroit was blocked for about half an hour as police investigated and cleared the scene. Officers directed traffic and kept vehicles moving along without too much of a backup.
“We get accidents at this intersection,” Reinker said. “They’re not a rarity, but we don’t get them every day.”
Air bags in both cars deployed, and both cars had moderate to severe front-end damage. They were towed from the scene by Hall’s Towing.
