Fire overnight damages duplex in Lorain

LORAIN — A fire overnight in Lorain caused a little more than $40,000 damage to a duplex.

The fire, reported about 3:10 a.m., damaged both the upstairs and downstairs units of 327 W. 15th St., according to Assistant Fire Chief Gary Burls.

“The fire appeared to start in the front-left corner of the first floor and travel up,” Burls said. “Most of the damage was to the upstairs unit.”

Three residents of the home were already outside when firefighters arrived, Burls said. He said it wasn’t clear which unit those people live in or whether anyone else lives in the home.

Burls said the fire caused $40,000 damage to the home and $1,000 damage to its contents.

The fire was under control by 3:52 a.m., and the last firefighters left the scene at 4:54 a.m., Burls said. Fire investigators are on the scene this morning, and a cause has not yet been determined.

Burls was not sure if the residents would be able to remain in the home. Electricity and gas to the home were turned off after the fire, but “it’s possible if they got those turned back on, they could stay in the house; of course, the owner may not want them to,” he said. “We haven’t been notified by the Red Cross that they requested assistance.”
