Boy scalded last year in hospital with head injury
AMHERST — A 3-year-old boy was in critical condition Friday after being flown to a Cleveland hospital with cranial bleeding and bruises on his body.
This isn’t the first time the boy, Jesse Crum, has been taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center for serious injuries.
On Jan. 5, 2009, he was taken to Amherst Hospital by his mother for second-degree burns to his left leg, thighs, buttocks and lower back. According to court documents, his mother’s boyfriend, Peter Jones, had placed Jesse, then 2, in a scalding hot bathtub while babysitting.
Jones didn’t seek treatment for the scalded boy until several hours later when the mother came home, according to the documents.
Jones, 22, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of endangering children and had been scheduled to be sentenced Monday. That hearing has been continued.
No one has been charged in connection with Jesse’s latest injuries, but Jones’ parents, who own 126 Forest Hill Drive, where the boy was injured Friday, were arrested after police searching the home found marijuana growing there.
Dallas Jones and Theresa Jones each were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, Amherst police Sgt. Dan Jasinski said in a news release. He said additional charges are pending in Friday’s incident.
Jasinski did not say how Jesse was injured, and no one answered the door at the Jones’ home on Friday.
Amherst police began investigating after they were alerted to Jesse’s injuries by Lorain County Children Services, Jasinski said.
Neighbors Sally Morrison and Scott Ranham both said they knew nothing about Jesse’s injuries but believed he lived there with the Joneses. They said Jesse’s mother, who has an infant child with Peter Jones, also lives there with the family.
They said those in the Jones family are polite people who minded their own business.
“They’re very nice,” Ranham said. “They’re the kind of people that you wave to.”
