Thousands lose power in Elyria
ELYRIA – About 4,100 FirstEnergy customers were without power Saturday afternoon when a transmission line fell and took out the power lines below it, FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin said.
Around 4:15 p.m., the higher transmission wire fell in the area of Infirmary Road and West River Road South and “hit additional wires below it, so two groups of customers were affected,” Durbin said.
The top line’s failure left 3,000 residential customers without power for 45 minutes, while an additional 1,100 lost power when the lower distribution lines were taken out.
Eight hundred of those customers had power again with two hours, most of the rest had power within 2½ hours.
About 24 customers were expected to have power restored by 11:30 p.m. Saturday , Durbin said.
The cause was unknown Saturday.
“We want to get the power back on as quick as we can and then worry about what happened,” Durbin said. “It’s possible something got blown into the wire. We just don’t know yet.”
