Girls basketball: Westlake’s Kalpana Beach 2nd-team All-Ohio
Two juniors and a senior highlighted the area selections to the Divisions I and II All-Ohio girls basketball teams announced Monday.
Westlake junior Kalpana Beach was named to the second team in Division I, and Southview junior Shanique Ogle was named to the third team in Division I. Avon senior Ashley Evans was named to the third team in Division II.
The selections were based on the recommendations of a state media panel.
Beach, a
6-foot-1 forward, averaged 19.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots. She is a University of Notre Dame recruit and led the Demons to a 17-5 record, but missed the final two games after undergoing an appendectomy.
“I’m happy about this selection but also disappointed that I didn’t make the first team,” said Beach. “Missing our last two games definitely was unexpected. It was a disappointment that I couldn’t play and hopefully lead our team farther into the tournament. I’m still healing and have about a week and a half until I can play basketball and run for the track team.”
Ogle, a 6-0 post player headed to Bowling Green, led the Saints to a 16-9 record and a berth in the regional. She averaged 18.6 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.8 steals and 2.1 blocked shots.
“This selection is really amazing and certainly a surprise,” said Ogle. “It definitely is icing on the cake after a great season. Getting to a regional semifinal also was something that our team didn’t really expect to happen. This selection shows how hard work pays off.”
Evans, a 5-7 guard, averaged 20 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists as she led the Eagles to a 15-7 record and second place in the West Shore Conference with an 11-3 mark.
“Making an All-Ohio team was a preseason goal of mine,” said Evans, who is undecided about her future but is considering a career in sports management. “So this selection makes me feel really great and definitely is a very good achievement. I ran track and played volleyball other years but just wanted to focus on basketball during my senior year of high school.”
Admiral King freshman Alexandria Harris made the honorable mention list for Division I, and senior Teresa Davis of Firelands in Division II. Sarah Vick of Bay made the list in Division II.
Natasha Howard, who led Toledo Waite to a 79-34 win over Southview in a regional semifinal, was named Player of the Year for Division I. Co-Coaches of the Year for Division I are Tim Cogan of Kettering Fairmont, Manny May of Toledo Waite and Greg Noftz of Marion Harding.
Hathaway Brown senior Mylan Woods was named Player of the Year for Division II, while Rod Chlysta of Ravenna, Nancy Barbo of Geneva and Ray Neill of Sandusky Perkins were named Co-Coaches of the Year.
