The body of Elyria police Patrolman James Kerstetter arrived at the Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home on Chestnut Ridge a few minutes ago — escorted by dozens of police officers. He had been taken to Cuyahoga County for an autopsy.
Kerstetter, 43, was gunned down in a West 18th Street home Monday night after police were called about a man exposing himself and breaking a window at a neighbor’s home. The suspect, Ronald Palmer, 58, was killed when officers arrived on the scene to back up Kerstetter on the call.
He is the first Elyria police officer killed on the job in 67 years.
Outside the Elyria Police Department, a makeshift memorial has grown as people have stopped by all day to pay their respects.
