Spelling bee finals tonight; trip to national bee in D.C. on the line
EATON TWP. — To the winner go the spoils— in this case, a trip to Washington, D.C.
The winner of tonight’s finals of The Chronicle- Telegram’s 27th annual Spelling Bee will compete against other top spellers at the 83rd Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee competitions June 2- 4 in the nation’s capital.
Tonight’s bee begins at 7 at Midview West Elementary School, 13070 Durkee Road, Eaton Township.
The public is invited to attend the bee, which is filled with drama, suspense and excitement for family and friends of competitors, according to Jim Hartline, the spelling competition’s administrator.
Spellers include Matthew Cecil, the West Division bee champion, and Michael Prieto, the runner-up, both from Amherst Junior High School, as well as Westwood Middle School student Fiona Sims, who won the East Division Bee and runner-up Kaitlin Huff, who attends Sheffield Middle School.
The bee pronouncer again will be Bruce Van Dyke from WEOL 930-AM.
Besides The Chronicle, other sponsors are The Stocker Foundation, The Nordson Corp. Foundation, the Lorain County Community College Outreach Initiative, Invacare Corp., First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Lorain, the Ohio Lottery and the Educational Service Center of Lorain County.
