ELYRIA — A 16-year-old Elyria runaway was charged Sunday with assaulting several police officers when they tried to return the girl to her mother.
The teenager was reported missing by her mother just after midnight Sunday. The mother told officers the girl had thrown several bags of clothing out her window and left the house shortly after midnight, according to a police report.
Upon the mother’s recommendation, police went to a nearby apartment where they found the girl hiding in an upstairs apartment.
When she refused to go home with her mother, police tried to take her out of the apartment which is when she began fighting, police said.
The girl punched and kicked one officer. Once she was handcuffed, she kicked two more in the stomach as they came up the stairs to help get her under control, police said.
The girl was charged with five counts of assault on a police officer and resisting arrest and taken to the county detention home.
