Vermilion police bust three places for underage tobacco, liquor sales

VERMILION — Three people were arrested for selling alcohol or tobacco to minors during a “liquor and tobacco survey” conducted yesterday.

Those charged are:

Lara Mrava, 41, Brownhelm Country Store, for sale of alcohol and tobacco.

Ashley Falkner, 20, Discount Drug Mart, for sale of tobacco.

Cheryl Shaffer, 41, Mickey Mart, sale of alcohol and tobacco.

According to a news release from Vermilion police, Chief Robert Kish distributed a letter before the sweep reminding businesses to check IDs to prevent juveniles from purchasing tobacco or alcohol.

During the sweep, underage people were sent into the establishments to attempt to purchase alcohol or tobacco. A total of 19 establishments were checked.

The sale of alcohol to an underage person is a first-degree misdemeanor, and the sale of tobacco to a juvenile is a fourth-degree misdemeanor, according to the release.
