Several area athletes earn trips to state track meet

AMHERST — There’s no place like home.

Magnificat’s Madeline Chambers (Westlake) and sisters Clare and Abby Fischer (Avon) came to the Division I regional track meet in Lorain County as contenders and headed back to their Rocky River campus as team champions.

They also left as individual state qualifiers in the 1,600-, 800- and 3,200-meter events.

“I think it’s hard for everyone in each event,” Chambers said of qualifying for state. “I take it one step at a time. Now that we’re going, I’m excited for the team.”

“The girls came in here with very specific goals in mind individually and for the relays,” Magnificat coach Anjanette Arabian Whitman said. “They were told to execute those and do the best that they could with them. They were able to do that and the points took care of themselves. We were very proud of their individual performances that led to a nice team championship.

“What’s nice about it is that she’s taking even more teammates down with her to compete,” Whitman added about Chambers. “That makes it especially great for her. She likes the team aspect.”

Chambers is going to add to her wardrobe with next week’s trip to the state track and field championships at The Ohio State University. As she was cooling down from her last event, Chambers donned a T-shirt that read “Columbus Bound” with the names of all the Magnificat runners who qualified for the 2009 state meet.

Chambers earned state berths in the 1,600 and 800. She set the meet record in the mile with a time of 4:47.23.

Because of her top-four finish, Chambers will get to defend her 1,600-meter state championship from a season ago.

“It’s exciting,” Chambers said. “I felt pretty good in my race. I had fun racing. I wasn’t really shooting to break that record. I was just hoping to improve my time from last week, so I was happy to do that. I just want to go back and run and compete and have fun.”

In the 800-meter run, Chambers came away with second place, but forced the winner, Natalie Zidd of Medina Highland to set the meet record. Zidd ran the 800 in 2:11.01, slightly faster than the pace Amherst’s Theresa Feldkamp set in 2001.

“She had a good day — it’s a double for her that she’s done the last (two) years,” Whitman said. “I’m very pleased with her 1,600 time and then to come back so strong in that 800, she came back stronger than she and I both thought she might. We’re very proud of her.”

Clare and Abby Fischer earned third- and fourth-place finishes in the 3,200-meter run.

Southview sophomore Melody Ferris qualified for state as an individual and part of a team. She placed second in the 300-meter hurdles behind the record-setting pace of Midpark’s Kaila Barber. Ferris later ran the first leg of Southview’s 400-meter relay championship team. She was joined on the team by Brittany Cook, Ashley Malone and Alicia Arnold.

“It felt so good,” said Ferris. “My teammates, they were very supportive. They were there, they believed in me, they made me believe in myself. I was hoping to get gold, come in first, but second’s also good.

“We all did our part. We all did our thing out there.”

Other local girls who qualified to state Friday afternoon were Southview’s Alicia Arnold (third place in the 200 meters), Admiral King’s Sheral Robinson (fourth in the 100-meter hurdles) North Olmsted’s Mary Bridges (first in discus) and Midview’s Grace Demyan (third in discus).

Tyler Parrish of Amherst qualified with a runner-up finish in the high jump, while Elias Chbeir of Westlake earned a trip to Columbus by finishing second in the shot put. Avon Lake’s Matt Link is an alternate in the 3,200-meter run after a fifth-place finish.
