Visit Lorain County has put our area at the forefront of one of the latest social media trends — ahead of, among others, Los Angeles, Madrid, Philadelphia and even Cleveland, according to one blog.
The About Foursquare blog, an independent blog that reports on new social media site Foursquare.com, ranks Visit Lorain County No. 1 for tourism organizations making use of Foursquare to promote themselves as vacation destinations.
Foursquare is a location-based social networking site. Users “check in” at various sites, usually through applications on their smart phones. The site had reached 1.3 million users by June.
About Foursquare did a recent post “10 tourism groups promoting their regions through foursquare.” Visit Lorain County tops the list with 104 tips and 65 friends. But friend requests have sky-rocketed since the post, according to Executive Director Barb Bickel.
“I wondered why we were suddenly getting so many friend requests on Foursquare,” Bickel said. She said she actually found out about the blog post and Visit Lorain County’s ranking from Twitter followers of Visit Lorain County who shared the link.
According to the blog author, Foursquare is a “natural fit” for tourism groups.
“It’s a great way for these groups to promote tourism in their regions,” the poster wrote. “If I’m planning a trip somewhere with a local tourism group on foursquare, I often visit their profile first to get some ideas of places I should visit while I’m in town.”
