LCCC in line for $2M in research if appropriation bill is approved
ELYRIA — Lorain County Community College has secured $2 million in government research in the latest defense appropriations bill, U.S. Reps. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Township, and Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, announced Wednesday.
The bill needs to pass the House Appropriations Committee, the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The research is in restriction of hazardous substances components and sensor technology. Also to be studied in the research is what is known as “tin whiskers.”
According to NASA, these are electrically conductive, crystalline structures of tin that sometimes grow from surfaces where tin (especially electroplated tin) is used as a final finish.
They can grow several millimeters long and have sometimes grown longer than 10 millimeters.
They also can cause shortcircuits in electronic systems, leading to system failure.
The research will be done at the new Sensor System Integration Institute at LCCC’s Entrepreneurship Innovation Center. This program also will provide internship opportunities for students.
“The support consistently demonstrated by Congresswoman Sutton for Lorain County Community College has been a tremendous catalyst for our college to help transform our region’s economy,” Lorain County Community College President Roy A. Church said in a statement released Wednesday.
He added that by this sort of research can help make the area a hub for testing and packaging of sensors for military, biomedical and industrial use.
