Man steals computer, leads security, police on brief chase

ELYRIA — A Lakewood man was arrested for a variety of charges last night after he stole a computer and then led Wal-Mart security and Elyria police on a brief chase.

According to a police report, Regis Ferron, 35, was charged with theft, possession of criminal tools, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. He also had an outstanding warrant from Avon police, the report said.

According to store security at the Wal-Mart near Midway Mall, Ferron was observed pushing a shopping cart with a large computer in it around the store. He then entered the infant department and used needle-nosed pliers to cut the security device off the computer. He wrapped the security device in towels and placed it on a shelf.

Wal-Mart security attempted to stop Ferron as he exited the store, but he ignored them and continued walking and then began to run with the computer.

Elyria police arrived to find the man being chased in the area of Petsmart. The store security officer got in a cruiser with one police officer, and officers in several cruisers were finally able to cut Ferron off in a parking lot west of West River Road.

Ferron refused to get to the ground and engaged in a brief struggle with officers before being handcuffed, the report said.

Ferron then complained his finger had been injured in the struggle, so he was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center before being transported to the county jail. He was given a bond of $6,500.

According to Wal-Mart security, Ferron also stole cat food and grocery items. The total value of merchandise taken was $823.48.
