Fugitive arrested in Elyria

ELYRIA – A wanted fugitive was arrested Thursday in Elyria, according to Anthony Keffer, deputy U.S. Marshal for Lorain County.

Larry Keiper, 33, an unregistered sex offender, was arrested about 10 a.m. in the Brunswick Drive area, according to Keffer.

Keffer said an investigation into Keiper took place in Parma and Cleveland, which led to Lorain County. U.S. Marshals setting up surveillance on Keiper and spotted his vehicle. They arrested him after forcing entry into a home where he was staying.

Keiper was wanted on felony warrants for a sex offender registration and parole violation from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Adult Parole Authority. His prior criminal history includes weapons offenses, sex offenses, robbery, escape, resisting arrest and drug charges from Ohio and other states, including Maryland and Nevada.

“It’s the participation of the multiple agencies in Lorain County, such as the Ohio Adult Parole Authority, and working together that has made the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force such a great success,” Keffer said.

Party store worker punched by robbers

ELYRIA – An employee of a party supply shop told police she was punched in the face by a man and woman when she approached them about shoplifting this week.

Reports said a man and woman, both black, fled the Party Place at 1591 West River Road N. with an unknown amount of merchandise after they each struck the 45-year-old female employee in the face.

Police followed the vehicle the robbers fled in as it crossed state Route 254 on Bond Street. The vehicle was last seen while northbound on Bond Street in Sheffield Township. The vehicle was not found, reports said.

Man reports attack outside Bugsy’s

ELYRIA – A 34-year-old man was assaulted by three men outside Bugsy’s Speakeasy on Broad Street early Friday morning, according to a police report.

The man told police he had just walked out of Bugsy’s Speakeasy at 348 Broad St. at 2:23 a.m. and was followed outside by three men. One of the men accused the victim of a past incident, but the man told police he did not understand what the assailant was talking about.

The man became angry and began to hit the victim in the mouth and head. When the victim tried to defend himself, the other two assailants began pummeling him as well.

A female witness told police the three white suspects suddenly stopped beating the man and fled in a white cargo van.

Woman suspects ex-husband of break-in

LORAIN – A Fulton Road woman told police she suspects her ex-husband of stealing more than $1,400 in jewelry and other items from her home sometime Friday night.

Police said the woman discovered her front door open and lights on when she returned to her home in the 300 block of Fulton Road about 12:50 a.m. Saturday. She called police, who showed up and checked the residence but found no one inside. A mattress in an upstairs bedroom was moved, and the woman found an $850 Gucci watch, $300 gold earrings, a $250 satellite TV box, car keys and legal papers missing. The woman told police her ex-husband had been sending her threatening messages.

Woman ticketed after SUV is stolen

LORAIN – A woman who made a quick trip to a convenience store late Friday night came out to find her car gone, according to a police report. The woman was given a ticket for leaving her vehicle unattended.

Demetia J. Brown, 36, told police she drove her 1998 Land Rover to the Dairy Mart at 1442 Oberlin Ave. about 10:55 p.m. Friday. Reports said the woman left the vehicle’s engine running and the doors unlocked while she went into the store. When she returned less than five minutes later, the vehicle was gone.

A witness saw the Land Rover being driven north on Oberlin Avenue.

The store’s security cameras did not have footage of the parking lot, police said.

Sheriff to offer scam updates

ELYRIA – Free downloadable software offered by the County Sheriff’s Office and state Attorney General promises to keep the public informed of any new scams plaguing Ohioans.

The new “scam widget” can be downloaded at www.loraincountysheriff.com or www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/ConsumerSummit, and provides instant updates and early warnings for scams making the rounds, including fake checks, phony pleas for money or bogus charitable solicitations.

Anyone who feels they have been targeted by scammers should contact the office of Attorney General Richard Cordray at www.SpeakOutOhio.gov or (800) 282-0515.

Part of Olive Street closing Monday

ELYRIA – A portion of Olive Street will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic beginning 8 a.m. Monday. The closure, between Cleveland and Taylor streets, will last until 5 p.m. Friday for improvements to the railroad crossing grade.

All southbound traffic on Olive Street will be detoured east or west onto Cleveland Street, while northbound traffic will detour east or west onto Taylor Street.
