Man LifeFlighted after wheelchair, car collide

ELYRIA — An Elyria man had to be LifeFlighted yesterday after the motorized wheelchair he was in collided with a car while he was on his way to church, according to a police report.

Brennan Williams, 39, was treated and released from the hospital by afternoon, according to police.

Officers were called about 9:15 a.m. to the intersection of Clark Street and Warren Avenue. According to the report, Williams has cerebral palsy and had difficulty communicating with officers, who got crash details from the driver of the car who struck Williams and from witnesses.

Kelli Kundrod, 22, of Elyria, told officers she was stopped at the stop sign eastbound on Clark Street in her gold Chrysler car. She said she entered the intersection and the front driver’s side of her car was struck by Williams in his wheelchair. She said she didn’t see the wheelchair when she entered the intersection.

Williams’ wheelchair was an Electro Craft model, according to the police report.

Kunrod said she left to go to a nearby home to call 911.

Officers spoke with Randalyn Brindley-Jones, who told them she is Williams’ home health care provider. She said she and Williams were on their way to church — she in her car, and him driving his wheelchair.

She said Williams travels in the road because the sidewalks are too uneven.

She said she went through the intersection southbound on Warren with Williams directly behind her. She then saw the wheelchair and gold car collide and saw Williams lying in the intersection.

Williams was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center and then LifeFlighted to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
