EC-Elyria High ticket sales brisk

ELYRIA — Ticket sales are strong for the first-ever football matchup between the Elyria High School Pioneers and the Elyria Catholic Panthers.

“It is a big game because we have never played each other in football,” Elyria athletic director Jerry Chizmar said. “Everyone wants to be a part of history. It will not just be good for the teams, but also good for the city — sort of a morale booster for everyone.”

Tickets officially went on sale last week, but Tuesday — the first day of classes at EHS for juniors and seniors — saw a surge of interest.

The game’s venue, Ely Stadium, seats 6,500 spectators. Elyria Catholic has been given 1,000 tickets to sell and EHS will sell the rest.

Chizmar said he would not be surprised if tickets sold out.

“Right now, we are in good shape. We still have tickets,” he said. “But I would strongly recommend people who want to avoid standing in line or risk tickets selling out to purchase them ahead of time.”
