Car thief leads police on chase around Lorain

LORAIN — A car thief in Lorain would have been wise to be a little more selective, as he was nearly busted because the car he stole had expired plates.

He did, however, get away after leading police on a chase in the stolen van and then on foot.

An officer tried to stop the vehicle, a gold Pontiac Montana minivan, about 10:30 last night in the 2100 block of Washington Avenue, according to a police report.

The driver drove around another car, then went west on West 22nd Street. It began traveling at a high rate of speed, so the officer turned off his sirens but still attempted to follow it.

According to the report, it appeared a person was hanging out of or attempting to jump out of the open sliding door. Because the officer feared someone might be being held against their will, he again attempted to stop the vehicle.

The occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of North Central Drive.

The officer followed the driver, but lost contact with him when he went into a wooded area.

Officers set up a perimeter and brought in a police dog but were unable to locate him.

About 11:15 p.m., police received a call from a woman reporting the car stolen from 1222 Reid Ave.

Police are holding the vehicle to try and lift fingerprints.
