Fire officials investigating apartment fire

ELYRIA — Elyria fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire Saturday that gutted part of an apartment building off Barres Lane.

The blaze caused about $100,000 of damage to the structure at 347 Fifth St. and about $25,000 to contents, according to Assistant Fire Chief Tim Mitchell.

Ten families were assisted by the Red Cross or families after the blaze which started in a second floor apartment around 2 p.m.

Michelle Alexander, who lives in the apartment with her 9-year-old son, Xavier, and her fiance Leon Hunter, said she smelled smoke after a nap and saw her son’s bed on fire.

She said she tried to put the fire out using water, but then she saw the flames spreading out under the bed.

Alexander said she fled when she realized she couldn’t put out the fire.

Fire Lt. Wayne Eppley was treated at EMH Regional Medical Center for heat exhaustion.
