High school football: Elyria’s Farris is area’s lone first-team All-Ohio selection in Division I and II

ELYRIA — Elyria’s Chase Farris thought it was possible after being named District Player of the Year a few weeks ago. But the senior two-way lineman was still pretty excited when he found out Monday he was a Division I first-team
All-Ohio selection at defensive end.
The Division I and II
All-Ohio teams, along with players and coaches of the year awards, were released by the Associated Press on Monday. Farris was the lone area player to earn first-team honors in either division.
“I’m definitely excited about it,” said Farris, a 6-foot-6 defensive end and offensive tackle who will attend The Ohio State University on a full scholarship. “Being first-team all-state is one of the goals I was hoping to accomplish this season.
“When Coach (Steve Hamilton) called me and told me I was going to be
first-team all-district and that I made District Player of the Year as well, he told me that would guarantee me first-team
All-Ohio. So, I’ve known about it for a while, but it’s still pretty cool that it’s official.”
Farris gave credit to Hamilton, who also serves as the offensive line coach for the Pioneers, and coach Anthony Quinn, who is Elyria’s defensive line coach.
“I’ve got to give a shout-out to them,” he said. “They really helped me out a lot these last few years and I owe them a lot.”
Hamilton, in return, heaped plenty of praise on his standout lineman.
“He definitely deserves it,” Hamilton said. “Chase works hard academically and athletically and he deserves all the accolades he gets. He’s definitely moving on to bigger and better things, that’s for sure. It’s just an awesome honor for that young man.”
Farris finished the season with 95 tackles, 31 for loss, and 11 sacks.
“We talk a lot about being humble and continue improving, and Chase never let things get to him,” Hamilton said. “He could have easily done things differently this season with the scholarship already in hand, but he approached every practice and every game the same as he did before. He worked his butt off in the offseason and it carried over through the regular season.”
Farris joined defensive back Trynell Davis and offensive tackle Isaiah Byler as All-Ohioans at Elyria under Hamilton’s watch.
Farris’ favorite moment in his career came during Elyria’s Week 2 victory (10-6) over North Olmsted. In that game, Farris recorded his first career interception.
“We had been working on defending the screen pass, and it required me to play a little differently,” he said. “As it started working in practice, I started to get the feel of it and that my coaches were right. It just so happened in that very next game, they called a screen and I was in the right place and was able to intercept it.
“I’m still kind of mad that I didn’t score on that. I should have taken it all the way for a pick-six, and there’s no reason why I was caught. We won the game regardless, but I still would have liked to have scored.”
Farris did score a touchdown a week later on a blocked punt return during Elyria’s wild 56-35 loss to Elyria Catholic. His touchdown capped a three-touchdown rally late in the first half that tied the game at 28. However, the Panthers scored on a 78-yard touchdown pass just before halftime and rode the momentum through the second half.
“EC was our biggest disappointment of the season, by far,” Farris said. “There’s not much else you can say about that.”
Farris was proud of the way his team bounced back from a 1-4 start to go 4-6 and forge what turned out to be a division championship game against Twinsburg in the season finale. The Pioneers lost that game, 45-0, but it didn’t diminish the accomplishment.
“We just started playing as a team and started to pick up momentum,” said Farris. “Nobody on that team had ever played for a conference championship in football, so it was a first for everybody. We tried to go into it with a level head, but that one turned out bad, too.”
Hamilton is excited about the team’s improvement this season and is looking forward to an even better year in 2011.
“We’re only losing two on offense and four on defense,” he said. “However, Chase accounts for one of those losses each, and he’ll be difficult to replace. We’re gonna miss him.”
Other area players awarded All-Ohio honors in Division I included Amherst’s Tyler Parrish (senior wide receiver), Marty Thomas (senior linebacker) and Mat Malloy (senior defensive back) and Lorain resident Geoff Mogus from St. Edward (senior offensive lineman). All four were named to the third team.
Area players earning All-Ohio honors in Division II included Avon Lake’s Brian Mihalik (senior defensive lineman), Avon’s Patrick Furnas (senior linebacker), Olmsted Falls’ Connor Cantrell (senior linebacker) and Bill Budosch (senior, offensive lineman) and Westlake’s Jacob Kutz (senior defensive lineman), all of whom were second-team recipients. Avon Lake’s Ronnie Willoughby (senior wide receiver) and Andrew Bohan (senior offensive lineman), Avon’s Matt Eckhardt (junior wide receiver) and Olmsted Falls’ Zack Ferster (senior defensive back) were named to the third team.
