March 15, the night gunshots rang out on 18th Street and Elyria police Officer James Kerstetter was killed, made history in Elyria by breaking a record many hoped would live on forever.

The veteran officer became the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in the city in 67 years. Kerstetter’s assailant, Ronald Palmer, was killed the same night by Elyria police officers coming to Kerstetter’s aid, but Kersetter’s death ripped a hole in the community and sent thousands into a state of mourning.

If some good could have come from the horrible tragedy, it was the outpouring of love and sup-port showered on Kerstetter’s family and fellow officers by those in the community following the heartbreak. In pain, Elyrians came together to hold up one of their own and support the family of a fallen hero.
