Stop the Spread of Germs that Make you & Others Sick!
Good health habits for preventing illnesses include proper handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes to help stop the spread of germs at home, work and school. Stopping the spread of flu and other seasonal illnesses is truly in your hands! To stop the spread of germs that make you and others sick here are some handwashing and mouth covering tips:
- Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or the crook of your arm (elbow), not your hands.
- Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away. Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Put your used tissue in the waste basket. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.
- Clean your hands often. Wash with soap and warm water for 15 to 20 seconds. Humming happy birthday twice is an effective way to get kids to wash their hands for the appropriate amount of time. It is the soap combined with the scrubbing action that helps remove germs.
- When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. If using a gel, rub the gel in your hands until they are dry.
- Stay home when you are sick. This limits contact with others to keep from spreading germs.
Wash your hands and cover your cough – for the health of us all!
