Recent Data Reveals Seat Belt Use among Lorain County High School Students
A record setting 11 Lorain County high schools participated in the 2010 Buckle Up Bowl this Fall, showing the importance many area high schools have placed on encouraging their students to make wise decisions, like buckling up. Based upon seat belt survey data collected both before and after school-based interventions the Lorain County Safe Community Coalition is proud to announce Brookside High School as the winner for Most Improved Seat Belt Usage; and Amherst Steele High School as the winner of the Highest Overall Seat Belt Usage award.
Brookside High School, located in Sheffield Lake, obtained a 14% increase in seat belt usage following interventions such as using the Senior Government Class as a forum to discuss why seat belt use is important and rallying senior football players to assist in the project as a party of their senior service outreach projects. Amherst Steele High School obtained a 93% buckle up rate for both passengers and drivers through PSA-style messages on Steele News Live and advertisements throughout the school.
It is also important to note that 5 of the 11 schools had a final seat belt usage rates at or below 70%– a rate that the Coalition believes can be improved with some hands on support and efforts by students, parents and faculty. “Encouragement by peers is one of the most effective ways to instill positive change and create the life-saving habit of buckling up,” stated Lt. Hughes, Ohio State Highway Patrol Elyria Post Commander.
Buckling up is your best defense on the roadways! Unfortunately, too many teens continue to ignore warnings and potential consequences that can result from not wearing seat belts. Here are three things students and parents can do to encourage teen drivers and passengers to wear their seat belt:
- Insist on seat belts. Everyone should buckle up on every trip, every time.
- Be the next top model. Model good behaviors and hope that others will follow suitbuckle up, drive sober, and drive focused. Ask your friends and family to avoid text messaging and talking on their cell phone while driving.
- Set rules about safe passenger behaviors. Teens need to help each other by encouraging their friends to wear their seat belts, to take the time and space to learn to drive before pressuring them for rides, and never encouraging risky driving. Talk with your teens about how they can support their friends as passengers.
Remember that whether driving across town or just around the neighborhood, wearing seat belts is the absolute best way to protect yourself and passengers from severe injury or even death in a crash. Given results of the 2010 Buckle Up Bowl, the Lorain County Safe Community Coalition will be sponsoring another Bowl in Spring 2011.
