Cheers to the New Year on Lorain County Roadways!
New Year’s Eve is a time to remember all the good things from the past year and welcome in a New Year with fun-filled celebration! For many people, this means heading out to a friend’s house, a favorite restaurant or to a party for a few festive drinks. Many instances of drunk driving accidents can be prevented by someone interfering. Today, with cell phones in almost every driver’s pocket, you can help stop a drunk driver before it was too late.
If you see a driver who you suspect is driving under the influence and you have a phone available its worth a few minutes of your time to save that drunk driver from hurting themselves and/or others.
- Dial the local highway patrol or police department,
- Get the license plate number of the car,
- Let the authorities know that you suspect a drunk driver, and
- Give your location.
New Years celebrations can lead to dangerous roadway conditions due to increased traffic, the potential for wicked winter weather and the risk of impaired drivers on the road, here are a few steps you can take to ensure that your 2011 kicks off in a safe and fun manner:
- Designate a driver before festivities begin to be sure you get home safely.
- Drive sober; buzzed driving is drunk driving. So if you think youve had one too many, play it safe and call a cab.
- Buckle up! Wearing a seat belt is your best defense against an impaired driver!
If youre planning to host a New Years bash, keep in mind the following things for a fun-filled night at the party and on the roads:
- Revolve the celebration around an event, party or game – not alcohol or food.
- Offer non-alcoholic drink options – other than just water. Click here for special zero-proof drink recipes everyone can enjoy.
- Help guests arrange safe & sober rides home.
- Honor designated drivers with a special party favor to thank them for their life-saving efforts.
