Dog found in cage in freezing cold

LORAIN — Police took custody of a dog they said was huddled shivering in below-freezing temperatures with no food or water at a Lexington Avenue residence Friday night.

The black and white dog, weighing about 20 pounds, was found inside a wire cage on the porch of a home in the 1700 block of Lexington Avenue about 6:20 p.m., police said.

Officers investigating an animal cruelty complaint found the dog curled up in the cage wearing a collar but no tags.

The animal’s food dish was empty, while a water dish had a small amount of frozen water in it, reports said.

The bottom of the cage was covered in dried animal waste. A blanket was lying near the cage but the dog could not get it.

No one answered the door when police knocked. Reports said another officer indicated the animal was found in the same condition when he was there the night before on an unrelated matter.

The dog was removed by police Friday and taken to an area veterinarian.
