Walk your Way to Health with Pedestrian Safety

Walk your Way to Health with Pedestrian Safety

The Reality on the Road

In 2008, more than 4,300 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, and another 69,000 pedestrians were injured. This averages one pedestrian death in a crash every 2 hours, and a pedestrian injury every 8 minutes. In Lorain County between 2005 and 2010, there were 14 pedestrians killed.

Steps for Safety

Whenever you’re walking, keep these tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in mind:

  • Be careful at intersections, where drivers may fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians while turning onto another street.
  • Increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing retro-reflective clothing.
  • Cross the street at a designated crosswalk.
  • It‘s much safer to walk on a sidewalk, but if you must walk in the street, walk facing traffic.

Get Moving with Walking Maps
Now that warmer temperatures and more daylight hours have arrived, it’s a great time to get out and explore Lorain County communities while walking! Currently there are 15 walking maps featuring Lorain County communities, schools and worksites available to download, at no cost, at loraincountyhealth.com.
