North Ridgeville girls track team wins season-opening Nelson Howe Invitational

HENRIETTA TWP. — The North Ridgeville girls and boys track teams each scored 117 points at the Nelson Howe Invitational track meet at Firelands High School on Friday.

But despite the identical scores, the two teams came away with slightly different results.

For the girls, the 117 was good enough for first place in the meet. For the boys, it was good enough for second.

The girls claimed the championship over Keystone (110 points) and Olmsted Falls (109).

The boys fell short against the Olmsted Falls, which won 10 of the 17 scored events, en route to 152 points.

“I’m very pleased,” North Ridgeville coach Dan Rademaker said.

“This is a good meet for us. We’re not a deep team. We’re kind of thin, so one-per-event suits us pretty well.

“The kids stepped up and we had a lot of good performances from a lot of different kids. It’s always good to win.”

“In each event, I think we had a person that was strong and had a good chance of winning,” Olmsted Falls coach John Novotny said. “They looked real good in the running events. In the field events, we did OK. Our relays did OK as well. It was pretty strong across the board.”

In the boys division, Olmsted Falls placed third in the opening event, the 4×800-meter relay, but responded by winning five of the next six races. The Bulldogs got a lift from their distance runners as well as a solid showing in the field events.

Edwin Rosa ran the mile in 5:11.50, nearly six seconds ahead of Ben DeBottis of Brookside. Troy Swiderski won the two-mile run by just under four seconds. Jordan Bohlen won the boys discus throw with a toss of 130 feet, 10 inches. He also finished second in the shot put.

“Troy Swiderski, I felt he had a real good chance of winning,” Novotny said. “I was real happy with Edwin Rosa. He worked real hard in practice and had a real nice race. It was pretty close to what he ran last year. I had a feeling that if Troy ran the way he was capable of, he had a good chance of winning. Edwin surprised me, ran a good, solid race.

“The discus, (Bohlen) throws pretty consistent. His goal is to make it to regionals in the discus and take it from there. He was real strong and consistent at the end of last year in the discus and so far, he’s been looking really good in practice. He’s thrown twice and he’s been in the 130s both meets. He’s looking to break 150.”

The North Ridgeville girls got off to a quick start with a dominant win in the 4×800-meter relay, besting econd-place Firelands by more than 18 seconds. The Rangers took the advantage on the second lap of the eight-lap race and never relinquished it.

“We weren’t quite sure what we had,” Rademaker said. “We had a couple young kids running. They really performed and our 4×200 team is a pretty good team. We’re expecting them to be pretty good throughout the year. That obviously helped us.”

Individually, Keystone freshman Jenna Quillen made a nice start to her first-ever high school meet.

She placed fourth in the high jump before winning the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. Quillen won the 300 hurdles by just under two seconds and the 100 by less than a half-second.

“I felt pretty good about the 100 hurdles,” Quillen said. “My form wasn’t that great on the 100, but this was my first time in the 300 hurdles and I was pretty satisfied with myself. This definitely encourages me to do a lot better and improve on my times.”

Columbia’s Domenique DeMaria had to hurry when she stepped off the bus at Firelands. After dropping the baseball team off in Lorain, the track team got to the meet later than expected. DeMaria did not let it faze her though, as she won the discus and then took the shot put.

“Yeah, I didn’t have much time to warm up, but I went out and tried as hard as I could, like I always do,” DeMaria said. “It was a little bit more difficult not having any time to warm up. I fought through it. My discus throw was 10 or 15 feet under my personal record, which is 118 feet, 3 inches. My shot put throw was about two feet underneath what it usually is, 37 feet.”
