Weather leaving some schedules up in the air

If at first you don’t succeed, hope it someday gets dry, dry again.

Not how that old saying goes? Try telling that to area athletic directors, softball tournament managers and the players and coaches.

Noah probably had a more optimistic outlook that he’d see sunshine than these folks do.

Monday another full slate of softball tournament games was washed out, meaning they’ll give it a try again today. Well, some of them will. Maybe. It’s complicated.

If the weather cooperates, and there’s no real good reason to think it will, here’s what we know:

  • The Division II district semifinals scheduled for Monday at LaGrange Community Park will be played today instead. That’s Keystone vs. Holy Name and Avon vs. Bay. Both games have a 4:30 start. The final is set for Wednesday at Community Park at 4:30.
  • The Division III district semifinals at North Ridgeville High School which were set for today, will still go on as scheduled. Black River plays Lutheran West at 4 p.m. with Columbia facing Loudonville at 5:30. The final is set for Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at North Ridgeville.
  • Three county teams are still trying to complete sectional finals, but only one is set in stone. That’s Avon Lake’s Division I final against St. Joseph Academy. Originally set for Friday and rescheduled for Monday, the game is now set for today at 4:30 p.m. at Avon Lake High School.
  • Open Door’s Division IV sectional final at Chanel, also postponed both Friday and Monday, will be today … probably. The game is listed as having a 3 p.m. start on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website, but when contacted Monday night, Patriots coach Ken Trigg said he hadn’t received official confirmation of the time change. But since Open Door has a band concert tonight, the Patriots definitely are hoping the time is moved up. He expected to hear for sure one way or the other this morning.
  • And now to Midview. The Middies were also supposed to play their Division I sectional final Friday, but that was moved to Monday because Garfield Heights and Lincoln-West’s game was rained out. But that game was also rained out Saturday and again Monday, meaning Midview isn’t sure when it will get to play the final.

The plan, according to Midview athletic director Creg Jantz, is for the teams to play a doubleheader today at Midview. However, Garfield Heights and Lincoln-West have to agree to that first, as well as to letting their players out of school early so that two games can be played.

If the schools don’t agree to that, Midview will have to wait until the semifinal is played, which could mean the final won’t be held until Wednesday. That would mean a tight schedule since the district tournament is supposed to start Thursday at Day Park in Parma.

So for now, Midview is hoping it will have a game today at 4:30, but won’t know for sure until this morning.
