Donations enable Friendship APL to create ‘cattery’ for felines awaiting adoptive families

ELYRIA — A fancy new cattery is providing pleasant digs for cats at Friendship APL thanks to donations from two organizations and painting and decorating work by Girl Scout Troop 543, according to Executive Director Greg Willey.

The new cattery can hold up to 15 cats. The cattery will be used to help house some of the more than 200 cats at the shelter, which normally houses a maximum of 120 cats, Willey said.

Sadly, animals are victims of all kinds of abuse and neglect when times get tough, and cats are no exception, he said.

Just this week, a volunteer rescued a 5-week-old kitten tossed from a black SUV on Grafton Road, and a dog warden brought in a female Siamese that nearly drowned in a drainage ditch, he said.

The cattery is about 20 feet square and was placed in the old gift shop at the APL thanks to a $2,500 donation from ShurTech Brands LLC and $500 from Doggie Do in Oberlin, Willey said.

  • The normal $40 adoption fee for cats that are spayed, neutered and wormed will be partially waived the next three weekends in honor of the opening of the Friendship APL cattery.
  • On Saturday and Sunday, all “fat cats” will be $5; on June 18 and 19, all cats that are black, white or a combination will be $5 in a “tux and tails” event. On June 25 and 26, there will be a “6-25” event where all cats will be $6 and all kittens will be $25.
  • Weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays.
