“All season these kids challenged themselves to train hard even when the weather kept us inside doing P90X workouts,” Avon coach Ben Cable said. “I knew at the beginning of the season that we had some special talent. These athletes seized each moment. I can’t wait to see what all of these kids accomplish at the high school level if they keep themselves engaged and excited about track and field.”

Moore, Furnas and Laird are seventh-graders, the rest eighth-graders.

Avon also performed well on the boys side. Sean Kane was second in the 3,200 (10:58.62), eighth in the 1,600 (5:12.85) and ninth in the 800 (2:19.76). John Maxwell was fifth in the 400 (55.07) and seventh in long jump (17-4).

Avon set eight school records this season.

Other local schools were also represented at the state meet. Avon Lake’s Anthony Thielman was ninth in shot put (43-2¾) and 16th in discus (114-0). Antonio Carreon of Amherst was 19th in the 200 (25.46) and 22nd in the 100 (12.71). Oberlin’s Jordan Ruffner was 22nd in the 400 (59.47).
