The first thing you should do if you want to determine whether you need to add more insulating materials to your home is do a little measuring. Find out the R value of your current insulation. The R value is the resistance to heat flow. The higher the number, the more energy efficient and effective the materials are. If you have fiberglass material, measure the depth and multiply the inches of depth by 3.2 to determine your R value. The R value of foam, or foam board can be determined by multiplying inches in depth by the number 5. It is advisable to have a value of R-22 or greater. The R value may also be marked on the product.
Other signs may indicate the need to re-insulate your home as well. For instance, if you notice your home is drafty, you may need to add another layer of insulating material. You may need to replace your insulation entirely if it has developed mold or mildew growth. Failure to replace it may affect the indoor air quality of your home.
