ELYRIA — Children’s Services was called in after two small children were found wandering in traffic yesterday morning.
Police were called to the area of North Abbe Road and Thornwood Drive a little after 10 a.m. Passers-by had managed to get the boys, who had been pushing a toy lawn mower and wearing adults’ shoes, out of the road.
The boys said that they were 3 and 4 years old and that their mother was at school, according to a police report.
Officers searched the neighborhood for more than an hour, but could not locate the boys’ parents, the report said, and no one had called to report them missing.
After about two hours, police received a call from a girl who said she was their baby sitter, the report said.
She told police she had put the 1-year-old twins down for a nap and though the boys were in the basement.
The boys’ mother told officers she and her husband were struggling to support their five children, and she was going back to school so she could work.
According to the report, police plan to interview the baby sitter, and Children’s Services will assist the family with their day care issues.
