Yeomen baseball players honored
OBERLIN — Oberlin College graduates Phil Brua and Max Phinney were named to the Division III All-Buckeye State team by Chris Webb of Buckeye State Baseball.
Brua, an Avon High grad, was a second-team pick. He had three wins and five saves in 20 appearances during his senior season. Opponents batted just .213 against him and he had a WHIP of just 1.07, while earning second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors.
He is pitching for the Vancouver Canadians, a short-season Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Phinney, an honorable mention choice and an Oberlin High grad, led the Yeomen with a .357 batting average in his senior season. He also led the Yeomen with 28 RBIs and a .470 slugging percentage. He was an All-NCAC honorable mention pick and was second on the team with 41 hits.
He also had 54 total bases and eight doubles and his five sacrifice flies set a single-season school record.
Kieser, Vanucci win with record times at Smiles for Sophie
AVON LAKE — Cleveland’s Fred Kieser and Westlake’s Christina Vanucci picked up wins Monday at the fourth annual Birthday Bash and Dash 5K to Benefit Smiles for Sophie Forever, a foundation confronting pediatric brain cancer.
Both runners won in course-record times, Kieser in 14:47.3 and Vanucci in 18:08.1.
More than 550 runners participated in the event, which started and finished at Walker Road Park.
