AMHERST — A seven-vehicle crash on state Route 2 Monday afternoon occurred shortly after another crash going in the opposite direction.

Amherst police Patrolman Troy Donaldson said one man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center as a result of the crash, which occurred about 4:10 p.m. at the state Route 58 overpass in the eastbound lanes.

Donaldson said police are still investigating what caused the crash.

The crash shut down the eastbound lanes for at least three hours.

About 25 minutes before that accident, a 37-year-old man went off the left side of state Route 2 and struck the guard rail between Middle Ridge Road and Route 58 in the westbound lanes. Sean Williams, of Westlake, was taken to Mercy then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Williams was still being evaluated in the emergency room late Monday, and his condition was not available.
