6-year-old girl tried to drown 7 puppies, was living in squalor, police say

LORAIN — A 6-year-old girl living in wretched conditions was found when police responded to a report of the girl trying to drown seven puppies in a swimming pool about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Two other girls younger than 10 stopped the girl, according to police Officer Eladio Andujar’s incident report. The incident occurred in the 4100 block of Black River Circle.

The puppies were turned over to the Lorain County Animal Emergency Center and Andujar wrote that their condition improved on Thursday.

The girl’s grandfather said he told the girl to get rid of the puppies, but didn’t tell her to drown them, Andujar wrote.

The girl was hiding under a kitchen table after the incident.

Andujar wrote that the grandfather said the girl’s father was in prison and her mother was working. There was so much garbage in the kitchen and living room that Andujar could barely move through it.

“I was shocked of the mess that this house was in inside and the thought of these little girls having to live this way,” Andujar wrote.

“In talking to (the girl) she was crying and afraid. I’m not sure if she realized the scope of what she did.”

Andujar wrote that the conditions in the house would be reported to Lorain County Children Services.
