Suspect in Lorain homicide has hearing delayed till Monday

LORAIN — The preliminary hearing for Angel Guerra, one of the men charged in connection with the death of Moises Velez, was delayed until Monday at Lorain Municipal Court.

Velez was shot in the head outside Southerners Place, 2926 Pearl Ave., Lorain, on July 20.

Guerra and Richard Alvarado, both 22, were arrested and charged with murder and felonious assault July 22 in connection with the killing. Alvarado’s case will next be heard by a county grand jury.

Mike Camera, Guerra’s attorney, said he thinks the state asked for more time in Guerra’s case because it doesn’t have enough evidence to move forward with a murder charge against him.

“My client didn’t shoot anyone,” Camera said. He said he expects the case against Guerra to be dismissed Monday.

Camera said Guerra was at Southerners the night Velez was shot, but that he “heard a shot and took off.”

Prosecutor Barry Motsch declined to comment on the case.
