Police can’t say who fired shot that killed Lorain man

LORAIN – It is not clear from surveillance video exactly who fired the one shot that killed Moises Velez, according to police.

Two men, Angel Guerra and Richard Alvarado, both 22, were arrested and charged with murder and felonious assault in connection with Velez’s July 20 killing outside Southerners Place, at 2926 Pearl Ave., Lorain.

Guerra appeared Monday in Lorain Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing, and Detective Buddy Sivert offered a few new details about the case during his testimony.

Sivert said Guerra admitted to being present at the bar, but Guerra told him Alvarado fired the shot that killed Velez.

Witnesses reported that both Guerra and Alvarado were carrying firearms, but detectives did not recover either weapon, Sivert said. He also said surveillance video from outside Roman’s Grocery did not show which man actually fired the shot.

Guerra’s case will now be heard before a county grand jury. But his bond was lowered from $5 million to $1 million.
