Avon Lake calls off search in possible drowning

AVON LAKE — Rescue squads searched Lake Erie near Miller Road Park late last night after receiving reports of a possible drowning.

Witnesses called a little after 10 p.m. and said two witnesses had reported seeing a male swimming in the area east of the fishing pier. The said they could no longer see him, and he was a long distance from the beach, according to a news release from police.

Avon Lake safety forces and the U.S. Coast guard responded and found the lake very treacherous, the release said. The area was searched by boat and helicopter, and no one was located. No one was reported missing from the beach, the release said.

The search was suspended at 1 a.m. due to the lake conditions and the uncertainty of a victim.

Anyone with information regarding a missing person that may have been at the park is asked to contact Avon Lake police at (440) 933-4567.
