Celebrating the kick-off of the fair 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, the littlest fairgoers were expected to let loose homemade, 2-liter bottle-rockets in the area behind the campers and train tracks along the fairgrounds, next to the overflow parking lot.
Kids ages 5 to 8 compete for prizes in four categories — best decorated, highest launch, most energetic launcher and safest launcher. Each design must meet construction and decoration requirements, according to the Lorain County extension office.
But every child goes home a winner: All participants receive ribbons for launching their rocket, regardless of height and appearance.
The launch sets the tone for an out-of-this-world fair.
