20-year-old gets 35th license suspension

ELYRIA – A 20-year-old Elyria man can’t stop driving despite never having a driver’s license, and he has racked up an impressive record to show for it, according to police.

Before Friday, Mondrell Green, of Adams Street, had 34 active driver’s license suspensions, and he racked up another when an Elyria police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle Green was driving on 15th Street, according to a police report. Green was charged with underage alcohol possession, having an open contained in a motor vehicle and driving under suspension in an incident that started out as a call about a man waving a handgun from the passenger seat of a vehicle.

The call came in around 11:20 p.m., and just as a description of the vehicle came across an Elyria police radio an officer reported seeing a car that fit the description heading west on 15th Street and turn into the driveway of a home. Green was in the driver’s seat, and the officer said he knew from experience that he did not have a driver’s license.

Officers checked the four occupants in the car for warrants, and besides Green’s suspended driver’s license, a second man, Kelvin Lane, 24, of Elyria, was found to have an outstanding warrant through the Elyria Municipal Court for domestic violence. He was subsequently arrested and taken to jail.

Green received a citation and was released from the scene. He called the owner of the vehicle, who came and took possession of the car.
