AVON — A man was taken by LifeFlight from the EMH Avon Emergency Care Center following a rollover accident a little before 9 this morning.

The accident, which was at the intersection of French Creek and Moon roads, shut down the road for about an hour and a half.

The driver, an 81-year-old from Avon, who was eastbound on French Creek Road, went around a curve and lost control of his car, according to the police and fire departments. The car was a dark-colored Hyundai, according to a Chronicle photographer who went to the scene.

The vehicle struck a mailbox and a guardrail and tumbled into a culvert. The vehicle had heavy damage to its front and rear. Firefighters had to extricate the man from the car.

Fire Lt. Eric Dudziak said the man, who he did not identify because he was unsure if family had been contacted, had a laceration across the top of his head and was “conscious but a little out of it” at the scene.

A small amount of oil leaked from the vehicle into the culvert, Dudziak said, but it was able to be contained before it could pose an environmental risk.
