Ground broken on new Avon interchange

AVON — The economy might still be sluggish, but Avon mayor Jim Smith predicted a flurry of development when ground was broken today on the $18 million Nagel Road/Interstate 90 interchange.

A facility planned by the Cleveland Clinic is just the first of many projects he expects to come to the area.

Without mentioning Elyria Mayor Bill Grace by name, Smith referred to Grace’s decision to include expensive landscaping including roses on the recent reconstruction of state Route 57.

At the same time Elyria put in roses, Avon received no public money for construction of the Nagel Road interchange, Smith said.

After his speech, Smith offered no apology for the verbal attack.

“He (Grace) tried to stop this project,” Smith said. “How many jobs did those roses create?”
