Crushers’ mascot sidelined while new head is on order

Stomper, the Lake Erie Crushers’ team mascot, has been absent from games recently, but he should return shortly.

That’s because a thief made off with the costume’s head about a month ago, said Daniel Helm, vice president of business operations for the team.

Helm said he thought the head was taken as a prank. Someone took the head from a storage closet at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon during an event.

He said the team is working on purchasing a replacement head.

“We’ve got another Stomper on the way,” Helm said.

The head by itself is worth a couple hundred dollars, he said.

The thief was not caught. Avon police looked into the theft, but suspended the investigation, according to a police report of the incident.

“Fortunately they didn’t steal the person inside it, so we’ll be in good shape,” Helm quipped.
